Facility Siting
The focal point of our national public affairs practice is public acceptance of the siting and operation of controversial industrial and infrastructure facilities.
H&G has designed community relations, government affairs, and third-party advocacy campaigns in support of more than 100 proposed projects and operating facilities around the country that were under duress due to public opposition: electric generating stations, transmission lines, chemical processing plants, mining operations, waste management facilities, dams and reservoirs, cogeneration plants, nuclear power plants, cellular towers, pulp and recycling mills, cement plants, interstate pipelines, pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, and many others.
H&G public acceptance campaigns use many of the same techniques as state-of-the-art political campaigns, including direct mail, issues advertising, proactive media relations, special events, alliance-building and grassroots lobbying. In addition, we emphasize high-impact conflict management strategies such as small-group meetings, public participation programs and innovative approaches to public meetings on controversial or sensitive subjects.
